European Maritime Day – Shipping, Life Blood for Cyprus




Participating once again in the celebrations and the efforts to promote and support the 10th “EU Maritime Day”, the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, as the trade association of the Shipping Industry in Cyprus, organised a Blood Donation drive on Wednesday, 24 May 2017, amongst the personnel of the Shipping Companies Members of the Chamber, at the Ygia Polyclinic in Limassol, projecting in this way the part of the social welfare work it carries out. The Blood Donation Drive was placed under the auspices of the Minister of Health, Mr. Giorgos Pamporides.

Τhe “European Maritime Day” is celebrated annually throughout the European Union on 20 May. The main objective of the “European Maritime Day” is raising awareness and informing the general public about the great opportunities offered by the sea, the challenges faced by the Shipping Industry, the environmental challenges, as well as the promotion of the significant contribution of the Shipping Industry in the economy of the Member States.

This is a celebration that concerns the whole of the European Maritime Cluster, since the majority of the Member States, including Cyprus, whether they are coastal or island areas, are directly associated with the element of the sea, for which the resources and maritime professions is of vital importance for prosperity and the quality of life, something which constitutes Shipping as ‘A Sustainable Development Machine’.

During the Blood Donation, the Chairman of the Limassol District Blood Donation Coordination Committee, Mr. Aristos Chrysostomou, presented an honorary plaque to the Director General of the Shipping Chamber, Mr. Thomas Kazakos for the continuous and long-standing contribution of the Chamber to Blood Donations. It is worth noting that from blood donations organized by the Chamber the past 25 years, over 2200 blood units have been collected.
